The iPhone of the European Commissioner for Justice was hacked

Several high-ranking members of the European Commission have been spied on using their mobile phones. This is what the British press agency reportsReuters, informed directly by the institution. The name ofPegasusis not mentioned in the press release, which speaks of another software “Israeli” from the same developer:ForcedEntry.

Published by the NSO Group, this program is said to have compromised the devices of five people, includingDidier Reynders, previously Belgian Federal Minister of Defense and currently in charge of judicial matters in Brussels. It was between February and September 2021 that the infection spread, discreetly, before Apple finally alerted the victims recently.

Didier Reynders, suspected of corruption

Reynders' involvement in this matter is not surprising, as the politician has already been involved in other particularly controversial affairs. In 2011 in particular, the former president of the Reform Movement helped to put in place legislation favoring businessmen suspected of fraud andcorruption.

But that's not all, since the current European Commissioner forjustice (!)also visited aSaudi princeconvicted in absentia by French courts and suspected of links with terrorist organizations in Syria. This is without counting the accusations made in 2019 and which led to an investigation aimed at determining whether the ex-minister received bribes on the public market, certain transactions combining shell companies, arms dealers and the presidential election in the Congo.

A designated manager

Saudi Arabia could therefore very well be hiding behind this hack, given thatthe royal family has already been accused of having most likely hacked another iPhone: that of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Apple, for its part, unsurprisingly did not wish to comment on this news.Reutershas not been able to determine with certainty who is behind this illegal intrusion or even if it could have borne fruit. If this is the case, however, compromising information definitively incriminating Reynders could leak in the coming weeks.Decorated with the Legion of Honor, he has in fact never been convicted and remains in office to this day, married to the President of the Court of Appeal of Liège and brother of the former King's Prosecutor in the Walloon economic capital.
