It's done: after being presented at the Worldwide Developer Conference, the Journal app is finally available on iPhone. You must have installed the update to iOS 17.2 to benefit from it, with a few other new features on the menu.
The Journal app, as its name suggests, is presented as a virtual diary. Apple automatically offers suggestions for filling out the notebook, based on “moments that you experience every day“. And for good reason: the platform is actually connected to other apps from the Apple firm, such as Photos or Maps (provided you give your consent). To start creating content, after launching the app and accepting the terms of use, simply tapNew entry.
Several options are then available to you. First of all, like a simple notepad, Journal allows you to write text. But it is easy to improve the rendering, for example by adding images or an audio recording. Thanks to GPS, you can also save a geolocation. Ideal for a travel diary, for example. In short, Cupertino has not skimped on the different types of format. Perhaps only the handwritten text is missing.
Day to day
After creating a note, simply tapOKso that it is correctly recorded in the log. The different entries then appear in the form of a chronological thread, with always the possibility of modifying or deleting the content in the future. For greater security and given that a lot of confidential information may appear inJournal, Apple also offers to lock its access. To do this, simply go through biometric unlocking withFace IDor Touch ID, depending on your iPhone's compatibility. A prompt suggests this after you create your first note.
The chronological display also allows you to add bookmarks to certain notes, to find them more easily later thanks to a filter available at the top of the app. For those who write regularly, this should help reduce manual search time.
Benefits proven by science
It's scientifically proven that keeping a diary and writing every day helps reduce stress and anxiety, to a certain extent of course. Putting your thoughts down on paper frees you up.
But Apple's Journal app arrives when many quality alternatives are already established. We think, for example, of the excellent solutionDay One,available here on the App Store. With a significant disadvantage for the latter compared to the newcomer from Apple, to import videos and audio recordings, you have to upgrade to a paid plan. With Apple Journal, everything is free, even if the features are not as advanced as with Day One. In both cases, your personal data is protected. In addition, storage is only local for Journal, for example, so Apple does not have access to your writing.
