Apple's very first mixed reality headset is expected to arrive sometime in 2022.If the rumors are all in agreement on this point, the technical characteristics of the latter are much more vague, and each analyst from the Apple brand tries to give their own hypothesis. Despite the fact that none of these theories can be verified before the release of the product, there are specialists from the Cupertino company in this world, voices that carry more than others.
This is for example the case of Ming Chi Kuo, who has just published a report containing many details on this virtual and augmented reality headset. According to him, the headset should be equipped with technology capable of performing “advanced detection” of hand gestures. In his report he explains that the headset will be equipped with more advanced 3D sensors than those that Apple uses in the iPhone and iPad for its Face ID facial recognition technology.
According to him, the headset will have new technology at Apple that he describes as “innovative” in order to detect the gestures and movements of the person who owns the headset. WhileSony also plans to release a virtual reality headset next year, the PSVR 2, the Japanese firm could use cameras on the headset to see where the controllers are placed and thus better incorporate them into the player's virtual universe.
A headset without controllers?
If we do not yet know whether or not Apple's headset will arrive with controllers, the Cupertino company seems in any case on the same page as its main competitor with regard to the problem of hand detection. According to Kuo, Apple should choose to use 3D sensors, the same as those present on the iPhone for Face ID. But in the case of this headset, there would be four of them, compared to just one for the iPhone.
As Kuo explains in his report, the Cupertino company hopes to be able to make the user interface more intuitive and lively. In this hypothesis, Apple would succeed in producing a headset that does not need controllers to be used, a real plus in this VR market, which is currently unable to get rid of its controllers. The analyst also thinks that the 3D sensors that will be used should allow for an increased field of vision, up to 200% further than what the current Face ID sensor offers.
Latest information regarding Apple's headset, Kuo estimates that it should weigh around 350 grams. While awaiting its release scheduled for next year, this headset raises a lot of expectations, particularly among investors who are hoping for a significant increase in sales, thus boosting the growth of the apple brand.
