Is the Galaxy Fold hinge durable? Answer in this test

Now marketed, the definitive version of the Galaxy Fold is normally able to face the difficulties of everyday life, particularly with regard to the openings and closings that the foldable smartphone will have to assume. To test what would happen with intensive use, the test laboratorySquareTradeput the smartphone to the test.

In a real crash test, the terminal could be bent more than 120,000 times. According to Samsung, this would be the number of times a Galaxy Fold user could open the smartphone, over a long period of 3 years. In the space of several hours,SquareTradearrived at this number thanks to a machine folding and unfolding the smartphone continuously.

Pixel bugs and a deteriorating hinge

In its video, the laboratory reveals its observations in real time. He explains in particular that after 18,500 openings, the smartphone encountered display problems, with pixel bugs, and that after 40,000 openings, they had to shut down the phone for the night, while problems with the touchscreen of the screen appeared, probably due to the heat of the locks/unlocks.

After 120,000 movements, the screen still posed a problem, with display bugs remaining more continuously. But the most important thing concerns the hinge: according toSquareTrade, it has indeed deteriorated in its movement.

A test of the screen's resistance to falls

Second test workshop, the fall and ground impact test. Unsurprisingly, the new Galaxy Fold is not one of the best performers. On the contrary, you will have to be very careful when you take a Galawy Fold with you: a fall, from 1m80, and it's a tragedy for the South Korean foldable smartphone. According to their tests, carried out with or without the small protective shell delivered with the terminal, each of the three screens could not resist. The cameras, too, were clearly disabled.

Samsung is aware of this point, and it was not surprising that the firm communicated about potential repairs to the screen of its new smartphone costing more than $2,000. To prevent customers from being too worried, the firm has decided to lower prices to only €130 per screen change, labor included. A very attractive price, while changing the 7.3-inch screen will not be the easiest to do.
