iPhone 14's Emergency SOS feature saves hiker

During the presentation of the iPhone 14 last September, Apple insisted at length on the arrival of a new functionality« SMS Emergency ». The latter should make it possible to send alert messages to emergency services even in white areas where the telephone network is absent.

Thanks to this new feature, a hiker in the Angelos National Forest in California was able to be rescued. According toABC7 Eyewitness Newswho reports the event Juana Reyes was hiking with friends when the trail collapsed under her feet. Injured by this incident, she is unable to leave and must then contact emergency services.

After several attempts to call 911 (the universal emergency number in the United States), she remembered that her iPhone 14 had satellite texting for emergencies. Although she admits that she doesn't "really know how it works", she was very happy to be put in contact with relief troops who quickly arrived on the scene.

An increasingly used feature

According to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, these accidents are quite common and messages from iPhones often end up in the area's call center. “This is already the third time this year,” assures the spokesperson who praises the merits of such a functionality.

As for Juana Reyes, the young girl was given a helicopter ride to the nearest hospital. After several x-rays, she was given a splint for her ankle (which had suffered a significant twist in the fall). Reyes has since returned home where she is resting.
