Computer sales down, but not Macs

Before the pandemic, computer sales worldwide were declining. Then COVID-19 hit and we saw a continued increase in global shipping, driven by remote working.

But today, demand is no longer as high. According to IDC data, the decline was 5.1% year-on-year. Lenovo, the world's number one, saw its shipments fall 9.2%, while HP's shipments fell 17.8%.

On the other hand, shipments increased for Dell (6.1%), Apple (4.3%), and ASUS (17.7%). Moreover, in its analysis of this data, IDC puts things into perspective.

“We have seen some slowdown in the education and consumer markets, but all indicators show that demand for commercial PCs remains very strong. We also believe that the consumer market will recover in the near future”, comments Ryan Reith, group vice president at IDC Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers.

Gartner also published its data. This indicates a drop of 7.3% in computer shipments, and an increase of 8.6% in Mac shipments. Concerning Apple, the firm writes:

“Apple continued its momentum to start this year, driven by the popularity of M1-based Mac devices. In the first quarter, Apple launched Mac Studio, a high-end desktop model based on M1, which boosted sales among PC users who need high processing power. »

2022: an important year for Macs

This IDC study is published at the start of a pivotal year for Macs. As a reminder, in 2020, the Cupertino company began a transition of its computers from Intel processors to Apple Silicon chips, supposed to be more efficient, but also more energy efficient.

And this transition, which should last two years, must be completed this year. Also, according to predictions, Apple should announce lots of new Macs in 2022. Among the most anticipated models, there are the newMacBook Airwhich, according to rumors, should have a new design, as well as an M2 chip. Apple has also already teased the next Mac Pro which, unlike its predecessor, should be equipped with an Apple Silicon chip.

Otherwise, as a reminder, during its first keynote in March, Apple lifted the veil on a whole new category of computer: theMac Studio.
