While Apple already presented its 3nm M4 chip earlier this month, we learn that Samsung plans to catch up in the field. For several years, the Apple firm has been equipping its devices with its Apple Silicon chips, to the point that it is no longer dependent on its former suppliers.
Samsung also makes chips, but the Korean giant haslagging behind Apple. Its most advanced smartphone models generally feature Qualcomm chips, while Samsung computers mostly feature Intel, although this is now changing.
While Samsung has just announced a brand newPCequipped withthe latest Snapdragon X Elitefrom Qualcomm, a new report from DigiTimes informs us of the company's progress in terms of 3nm chips.
Samsung is late
On the computer side, Samsung currently has nothing to offer and must still call on external suppliers. But for smartphones on the other hand, the company is moving forward little by little, even if it's not there yet.
After several failed attempts to do better than Qualcomm with its Exynos chips, Samsung partnered with AMD in 2019. This allowed it to benefit from the know-how of AMD, which is Intel's main competitor on chips for computer. With this partnership, Samsung hoped to finally separate from Qualcomm for its phones, as Apple managed to separate from Intel on Macs.
Since then, the Korean giant has regularly offered Exynos chips in its smartphones, but they are generally reserved for basic versions, because they do not offer good enough performance to equip theGalaxy Ultra. Apple's competitormust therefore rely on Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipsfor its most high-end model.
3nm Exynos in 2025?
Before its partnership with AMD, Samsung was already manufacturing chips. The first Exynos was called “8895” and was presented in 2017 by Samsung. It was engraved in 10 nm. Samsung then partnered with AMD in 2019, and presented the fruit of this partnership in 2022: the Exynos 2200 chip, engraved in 4 nm.
Since then, the firm has released several other models in 4nm, but according tothe DigiTimes report should present one in 3 nm, from 2025,who should equip the Galaxy S25. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, for their part, already have the right to 3 nm thanks to the A17 chip.
