When it comes to manufacturing a new generation iPhone, Foxconn Technology is in charge. Assembly operations would have restarted a few weeks ago in China, where the Taiwanese company has a large part of its factories.
However, and for the second time since its appearance on the market, the little gem from the apple brand will be made in India only a few weeks after the start of operations in China. Previously, it took several months before Apple diversified its production locations.
A little too ambitious?
After entrusting India with the manufacturing of the iPhone 14 upon its introduction to the market, the Cupertino company is continuing and strengthening its production strategy.
Until now, iPhones made in India represented only a tiny percentage of all those available on the market.
And for good reason, Indian production chains could accumulate up to 9 months of manufacturing delays compared to China.
This gap has narrowed over the years to the point that at the end of March, 7% of iPhones were produced in India. Apple reportedly aims to reach 50% this year, a figure that seems rather optimistic.
Steve Jobs' special relationship with India
The famous entrepreneur had a special relationship with India, going there at the age of 17 to live there, which some consider to be the trip that inspired the creation of Apple.
He has already praised India on various aspects, notably concerning the state of mind of its population or the way in which they think.
Steve Jobs, however, never praised the economic aspect of the country and the possibility of expanding its activities there.
Some sources report that Jobs considered at the time that "India is not as cheap as it used to be", or that the turnover rate there was high.
What may have been true for India when Steve Jobs was among us, is not necessarily true today. India is experiencing staggering growth in technology-related fields and even seems to want to compete with China.
