The new Mac Pro isfinally here, six years after its last version. This has been the subject of much criticism for its cylindrical design. This 2013 Mac Pro is notably nicknamed the “Garbage Mac Pro”.
It was last June, on the occasion ofWWDC keynotethat Apple announced the arrival of a new version of the famous computer. The Cupertino company then proudly declared that it was returning to a more modular case, unlike the case of the previous generation model.
Design-wise, the Mac Pro 2019 is reminiscent of the old Mac Pro from 2016-2012. And we can say that there is an improvement on this side, with the qualifier “trash” left aside to replace it with that of “cheese grater”…
Basic rate: 6,500 euros
This new Mac Pro is Apple's most expensive product to date. Its base price is6 499 euros. At this price, here is the configuration of the machine:
- 3.5 GHz 8-core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4 GHz
- 32 GB of RAM
- Radeon Pro 580X graphics card with 8 GB of memory
- SSD storage is 256 GB
- Souris Magic Mouse 2
- Magic Keyboard with numeric keypad
At this price, the case does not have wheels, but 4 feet, and no software comes with it, apart from macOS of course.
Max price: 61,939 euros
By configuring the Mac Pro with the most expensive component options, the machine achieves61 939 euros. Here are the monster's characteristics:
- 28-core Intel Xeon W processor at 2.5 GHz, Turbo Boost up to 4.4 GHz
- 1.5 TB of RAM
- Two Radeon Pro Vega II Duo graphics cards with 32 GB of memory each
- 4TB SSD storage
- Carte Apple Afterburner
- Souris Magic Mouse 2
- Magic Keyboard with numeric keypad
Except that's not all. Indeed, at this price, only macOS is included as software, and only mouse and keyboard. In addition, the case is still the tower format, without wheels, but with 4 feet. On these different points, it is possible to push the cursor and raise the price even higher:
- Casters for the case: + 480 euros
- Magic Trackpad 2 in addition to the Magic Mouse 2: + 149 euros
- Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro
- Express delivery instead of classic delivery: + 24 euros
Thus, we obtain the sweet total amount of63 151,98 euros, which we can afford to round to63 152 euros, given that at this amount, 2 cents will not make the difference.

RAM: +30,000 euros
It is interesting to look more precisely, in the best configuration, at how each component increases the price. For example, to go from the basic 8-core processor to the 28-core processor, it is8 400 eurosin addition. To upgrade from the base graphics card to the dual GPU Vega II Duo, it's12 960 eurosin addition. The Afterburner card, which speeds up video processing in Final Cut Pro X in particular, is optional and costs2 400 euros.
But the most impressive upgrade concerns the RAM. To go from the basic 32 GB to 1.5 TB,you have to add 30,000 euros!
In comparison, going from the basic 256 GB SSD to the large 4 TB SSD costs only 1,680 euros. Note, however, that Apple has provided an 8 TB SSD in the configurator, but does not yet offer it for sale. It is simply marked as coming soon.
Finally, it is possible to choose the rack format for the case, which costs 700 euros more, with, one imagines, the same components offered (without the option of wheels?). Like the 8 TB SSD, this rack case is also not yet available.
It is obvious that this is a machine that will not interest the general public, except very wealthy users. The raw power of this Mac Pro makes it suitable for very specialized environments. We are thinking in particular of video editing and post-production for cinema or television for example, or even for audio, in composition and mixing, but also in sound design or even in post-production as well.
