WWDC Keynote summary: new features in iOS 13, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS 6 and… One More Thing on the Mac side

Every year at the very beginning of June, Applebrings together its developers for several days of conferences and workshops around the programming of apps on its different OS. This is also when the Apple company generally unveils the new features that developers will have to get to grips with during the summer.iOS,macOS,watchOSettvOSare notably the regular stars of this WWDC presentation. But sometimes some big, unexpected announcements are also on the agenda,software, or evenmaterial.

And as usual, the iPhon.fr editorial team came together to give youshare these announcements live throughout the keynote here. This one having just concluded, here isour full announcement summary, new features and surprises from this conference!

Before the big announcements, Tim Cook took the time to recall the services launched and/or unveiled recently by the Cupertino company, including Apple News+, Apple Arcade, or even the Apple Card, Apple TV+. About the latter, and as an introduction, the series For All Manking, exclusive to Apple TV+, has unveiled its trailer.

Then, the CEO began describing the new features of the new versions of the different Apple OS.

What's new in iOS 13

  • performance improvements: Face ID (30% faster according to Apple), downloading apps (better compression of App Store apps), launching apps
  • dark mode: all the OS and apps go black, Apple Notes, Apple Messages, etc., but also the keyboard
  • “swype” mode for the keyboard: to write by sliding your finger over the keys, similar to what other third-party keyboards already offer on iOS (including Gboard)
  • real-time lyric sync in Apple Music
  • new settings for Mail, Safari and Notes: including a gallery mode for the note-taking app
  • redesign of the Reminders app: possibility to use groups of reminders, to give a degree of importance and to define a progress bar for certain tasks
  • what's new Apple Plans: Apple has collected new data in the United States, on land and in the air, for a more modern and precise rendering of maps, but also a Street View type view of Google Maps (available at the end of the year in xUS, the next year in some countries). The app also benefits from new features, including the ability to share your arrival time with friends.

  • improved sharing of your geolocated position: improved protection of your information, with for example the possibility of sharing your location with an app only once
  • Sign in with Apple: to connect to certain apps, it is possible to identify yourself without trackers, with Face ID for example, but also to benefit from a unique email generated randomly and automatically redirecting emails to the main Apple address
  • HomeKit: ability to use a new, more secure and private video recording system for HomeKit cameras, encrypting the video before uploading it to iCloud. HomeKit also opens up to routers, to have better control over sharing your internet connection
  • new options for Memojis: earrings for example, glasses, hairstyles, hats, AirPods, etc. The system even provides emoticons for each Memojis created
  • Portrait mode: new High Key Mono effect for portrait mode and new settings
  • photo editing: editing photos is done using the dials, which are visibly easier to use than the settings bars in iOS 12
  • video editing: possible rotation of videos, applications of effects and filters
  • Photos: improvements to the classification of your own photos, new Days, Months, Years tabs, and automatic video playback when browsing your photos. Photos are displayed dynamically, thanks to intelligent content analysis by iOS. The principle here is to show everyday photos and videos in their best light.
  • Shortcuts: new suggestions for shortcuts designed according to the user's habits. The app is also automatically installed on iOS 13
  • Siri: the voice has been improved, for a more natural tone during long sentences in particular

AirPods :

  • automatic reading of messages received by Siri: from any messaging app using SiriKit
  • sharing audio: possibility of playing music to a loved one equipped with AirPods, very simply
  • Hand-Off pour HomePod: bring the iPhone close to the speaker to play music from the AirPods to the HomePod
  • introduction des radios Live

CarPlay :

  • new screen view: the map is displayed on part of the screen and new information is visible next to it
  • Siri can work with Waze, but also Pandora on CarPlay

Apple presents the first version of this new system for iPad, iPadOS. Here are some of its features:

  • Widgets visible on the home screen
  • Improved multitasking: the side panels now have an integrated task manager, to return to previous apps easily. Split Screen is also more powerful. Apps can now display multiple tabs on screen, including third-party apps, such as two word files
  • Files app: many more possibilities for the file management app on iPad, including folder sharing
  • opening to USB media: USB sticks, SD card readers, etc.
  • Safari:the desktop version of sites visited on iPad takes priority over the mobile version, unlike Safari on iPhone. Also added a download manager, as well as other features (tabs, text size, etc.)
  • new gestures: contribution of “undo” via a swipe of three fingers, among others
  • new keyboard display: to write with one hand while the other is holding the iPad
  • Apple Pencil: improvement of latency at9 msand improved the iPad pen experience with a new tool palette, available in Apple apps or third-party apps

watchOS 6

  • several new dials: including a “Gradient” dial that displays a gradient of a user-selected color, as well as a haptic dial and a sundial
  • audio books: the Books app on the watch allows you to listen to audio books
  • new Calculator app
  • new Memos app
  • new complications: to add information to the dials. There is in particular the sound level complication, that of audio book reading, or even another showing the chances of precipitation
  • independence of Apple Watch apps: an Apple Watch app no ​​longer needs an iOS app
  • an App Store for the Apple Watch: to search, download and even buy Apple Watch apps without needing the iPhone
  • activity trends: one of the new health functions. Allows you to compare your activity over time. Gives detailed graphs of past days and weeks
  • hearing health: allows you to define the surrounding sound level, to warn the user and protect their ears during a concert that is too loud, for example
  • menstrual cycle tracking: to have an overview of its cycle, function also available without

  • but also: new “Audio API”, as well as new bracelets in summer colors

What's new in tvOS 13

  • redesign of the home screen
  • new control center
  • new underwater screensaver: result of a collaboration with BBC
  • multi-account functionality for Apple TV: each member of the family can have their own recommendations, among others. User switching is done via the control center, very easily
  • Apple Music: tvOS multi-account function also compatible with Apple's music streaming service
  • Console controller support: compatibility with the PlayStation Dualshock controller and the XBox One S controller

The new system for Mac: macOS Catalina

  • disappearance of iTunes: as anticipated, the iTunes app actually becomes Apple Music, but focuses only on music
  • new Apple Music app
  • new Podcasts app: including intelligent analysis of podcast content, to search for text in podcasts
  • new tabsynchronisation: the iPhone connected to the Mac can now be seen in a Finder tab
  • new TV app
  • iPad usable natively as a 2nd Mac screen: with Apple Pencil support
  • new voice control feature: to do everything on Mac, but also iOS, by voice
  • Find My: combination of Find My Friends and Find My iPhone. In particular, it can locate devices offline, which is often the case for a MacBook for example. It works over Bluetooth and uses the relay of other Apple users in the vicinity of the lost device. The latter is obviously blocked and unusable by anyone
  • Screen time: now available on Mac, modeled on the function seen on iOS
  • Catalyst Technology: to easily port iPad apps to Mac

New hardware features: the Mac Pro and its 6K screen

Here is perhaps the most anticipated office machine of the moment from Apple. The Mac Pro hasn't been updated in several years.

Here are some of the features of thenew Mac Pro:

  • all-metal housing with handles on the top
  • can integrate wheels underneath, optional
  • easy access to internal components, from both sides of the case
  • Intel Xeon processor, up to28 hearts
  • 6 RAM memory channels, accepting until1,5 To
  • 8 emplacements PCIe
  • connectivity: Thunderbolt ports are there
  • video part: support for several graphics cards in a dedicated module, which can even be doubled itself
  • optional, the cardAfterburner: this is an additional module dedicated to video editing, for even more graphics power. With all this, the Mac Pro can notably display 12 4K displays

  • cooling announced as quiet as on an iMac Pro

The new Mac Pro starts at $5,999, and will ship starting this fall.

To go with its new Mac Pro, Apple is also presenting anew screen, the Pro Display XDR, as expected following numerous rumors on the subject:

  • Retina LCD display6K
  • 32 inchesof diagonals
  • resolution of6016 x 3384, or 20 million pixels
  • contrast of 1,000,000 to 1
  • design similar to that of the new Mac Pro, with rear hole to optimize screen cooling
  • height adjustable and can be positioned in portrait mode
  • it is also removable from its foot and compatible with the most common adapters on the market

The new screen will cost $4,999 and will ship starting this fall. It would be delivered without a stand (999 dollars per stand, or 199 dollars for the VESA mount).

But also, ARKit and Swift

ARKit :

Development kitsRealityKitetReality Composerfor augmented reality make it easier for developers to offer apps using augmented reality.

On iOS, ARKit is moving to version 3. This includes new options for motion capture and the integration of real people into the virtual world.

To illustrate these new features, the Mojang studio presented Minecraft AR, a Minecraft game in augmented realitypreview here.

The demonstrator is directly integrated into a built Minecraft environment. And the world in which the person is immersed remains interactive. Minecraft AR is expected to arrive this summer.

Swift :

Swift UI is a new version of Apple's programming language. She wants to make it easier to program apps.

Many functions can be implemented simply by dragging and dropping.
