iPhone slowdowns: Apple finally condemned in France

The DGCCRF, the general directorate for competition, consumption and fraud prevention, had initially filed a complaint against Tim Cook's company some time ago for the following reason: Apple did not not informed the user of the introduction, in iOS updates, of an automatic setting reducing the performance of the iPhone in the event of a battery that is too old.

As the American company has been specifying on the French version of its website for a few hours, the DGCCRF considers that the iPhone manufacturer has committed an offense of “deceptive commercial practice by omission”.

Let's recall the facts: in 2017, the iOS 10.2.1 version arrived with a new feature hidden from users, namely the fact that any iOS machine found itselfslowed downin the event of a worn-out battery, to, according to Apple, protect it from unexpected power-offs. Which can actually happen with an old battery. Initially, only iPhone 6, 6s and SE were affected.

But with a subsequent update of iOS, at number 11.2, the clamping functionality wasdeployed on iPhone 7s as well.

At the end of 2017, and after numerous tests carried out by specialists, journalists and YouTubers, and also numerous complaints from users, Apple finally admitted everything in aofficial statement. It subsequently proposed a worn battery replacement program for iPhone 6, 6s, SE and 7 throughout 2018, atreduced rate(29 euros instead of 79).

The trial between the DGCCRF and Apple therefore ends with an agreement on the payment of a fine by Tim Cook's firm, reaching25 million euros.

Is this a high enough fine in your opinion? Or a very small thorn in the side of the giant that is Apple?
