Apple unveils 3 new features, but not for everyone

Apple has just released a preview of several new optionsfor iPhone users. The first allows you to control your vehicle's dashboard by voice, while the second allows deaf and hard of hearing people to benefit from recognition of sounds coming from traffic, such as honking horns. However, it is essential to take advantage ofCarPlayto take advantage of these changes, accompanied by the possibility of modifying the colors of the operating system interface. This is a strategy used by color blind people to better distinguish the elements displayed on the screen.

CarPlay is Apple's dashboard operating system. Many car brands are already equipped with it, but you sometimes have to pay for an option to benefit from the OS in the cabin. A major update was presented almost two years ago, making it possible to adapt to all types of panels and above all to work on several screens at the same time. But this new feature has not yet materialized, while the first compatible models should have been announced at the end of 2023. However, it is not uncommon for the developer to encounter delays. Sometimes, like with the AirPower wireless charger, products are even canceled before they come to market.

How to benefit from it?

To take advantage of the new features of CarPlay, which therefore require you to have an iPhone, you must also check that your car can install the operating system. Apple has just publishedone pageon its site, which currently lists all the car models compatible with its OS. We find in particular the Abarth 595 models released between 2017 and 2023, the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron from 2022 and 2023, the Corvette Convertible from 2016 to 2023, the Ford Transit Connect from 2017 to 2022 and even the GMC HUMMER Newest EV Pickups. In France, we can also cite the case of Honda Civic from 2016 to 2023.

On the mobile side, you should know that not all iPhone models are compatible with CarPlay either. But the list of eligible smartphones is already available. Among these, we find all models of iPhone 15 andiPhone 14. The manufacturer even supports older models, like the iPhone 5 or iPhone 6s Plus. Another dedicated page allows you to find out more,on the Apple website.

More details for CarPlay in June

According to our colleagues fromMacRumors, the three new features unveiled by Apple for CarPlay arealso compatible with iPad.

Apple is organizing its JuneWorldwide Developer Conference, which will perhaps be an opportunity to discover some of its future major updates. In particular, we assume thatiOS 18will be presented at the event, and announcements regarding CarPlay would not be surprising given the delays mentioned above.

We do not know if the publisher will emphasize these three new features during the show, but most of the features that will be in the spotlight on the big day will not be available in final version straight away. This version would therefore require us to wait until September to benefit from it, although with the deployment of a beta version after the conference and in July for the general public.

  • In particular, you can control CarPlay orally
  • CarPlay improves and supports new colors for color blind people
  • CarPlay now recognizes sounds, like horns, for accessibility
