macOS Monterey 12.1 and SharePlay: beta for developers

macOS Monterey has been available in final version since the beginning of the week, with its share of new features. But the next version, simply numbered macOS 12.1, is already being tested so that developers registered in Apple's beta program can now download it (build number: 21C5021h). This notably brings with it support for SharePlay.

What is SharePlay?

SharePlay is a tool found particularly withinFaceTime. This allows you to enjoy content together and remotely. For example, you can launch a series on the Apple streaming platformTV+, then share your screen to share with others in the call. Same thing for titles available on AppleMusic, or even following sports classes for subscription toFitness+.

Everything is compatible with up to eighteen people, with volume controls adjusted so you can continue listening to the video or audio track without losing track of the conversation with the participants. SharePlay works on Mac, but also on iPads, iPods and iPhones. Publishers can now submit their platforms to Apple so that they are compatible with the service, but we do not yet know who is in the running. Disney+ and Prime Video would be welcome.

Compatibility and installation

The list of Macs compatible with macOS Monterey was made public by Apple in the spring, and is available right here. In particular, we find most of the brand's laptops released in 2015 and later, but some devices such as the iMacs marketed before this date or the Mac mini from 2012 are unfortunately not eligible for the update.

Warning: Do not try to install a beta developers profile on your computer unless it is a machine dedicated specifically to such testing, otherwise you risk encountering serious technical problems that could slow you down.
