Apple confirms: an iPhone with a worn battery is slowed down by iOS to avoid unexpected shutdowns

Last week, a thread on Reddit garnered many comments.
testimonials from users who observed a more responsive iPhoneAfter
have changed the batteryof it, suggesting that the state of wear of the
battery was affecting the performance of the device.

This was thenconfirmed
by Geekbench editor, who carried out a study on
machines running iOS 10.2, 10.2.1 and 11.2. The results seemed to show that
the machines are actually slowed down depending on the state of wear of the
battery.

Apple has just providedofficial informationet
confirmedthat an iPhone with a worn out battery is slowed down by iOS
pouravoid unexpected stops.

Apple made the following statement at
site TechCrunch:

"Our goal is to provide the best experience to customers, which
includes good overall performance and extend the life of
their devices. Lithium-ion batteries are less able to meet the
high system demandsin case of cold, ofweak
battery chargingandaging of the
battery, which may cause the device to suddenly shut down for
protect its electronic components.

Last year we implemented a change tol’iPhone
6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SEin order to smooth out consumption peaks
energy, butonly when necessary, in order to
to prevent the device from suddenly turning off in these conditions. We have
now extended this functionality toiPhone 7 with iOS
11.2, and we plan to do the same forothers
products in the future."

Since iOS 10.2.1, Apple has therefore integrated a modification for iPhones
with a worn battery in order to temporarily reduce performance when the
processor is very busy on intensive tasks, which is not
normally not often the case, in order to avoid sudden system shutdown.

If indeed it is rather appreciable not to have a machine which
suddenly stops its operation when we think that there is still some
battery, havingslowed down the processor and not reporting
that this is due to a worn out batteryis a questionable choice which
seemsneither totally positive for Apple nor for
the user.

Because it is better to have your battery changed and have a machine that
operates at its normal speed rather than thinking it is slow without
knowing that something can be done about it.

At least now we clearly know that the state of wear of the
battery has an impact on the performance of the device, especially when it is
very much in demand.
