Tim Cook talks about the arrival of Apple Intelligence in France

Following WWDC 2024, which took place in June, Apple presented its suite of tools that uses Artificial Intelligence. It's called Apple Intelligence. The first features should be launched next fall but certain areas of the world will be deprived of them for a while. This includes countries in the European Union, and China. This isdue to current regulations in the EU (DMA) and the Middle Kingdom, but Apple is currently negotiating with European and Chinese regulators to find a solution.

Tim Cook talks about China and the EU in a meeting

During a meeting with Apple shareholders, the company's CEO Tim Cook reacted to this matter by answering a question. After an investor asked him for details regarding Apple Intelligence in China and Europe (and therefore in France), here is the answer he gave:

We work, as you might imagine, with the two regulatory bodies that you mentioned. And our goal is to move as quickly as possible, obviously, because our goal is always to make features available to everyone. We need to understand the regulatory requirements before we can commit to doing that and set a timeline to get there, but we're working very constructively with both.

Whatever happens,Apple Intelligence will only be available in English at launch, with the implementationother languages later, probably current 2025. Therefore, even if European legislation had not posed a problem, Apple Intelligence would not have been available in French at launch. To benefit from it this fall, you must be outside China and the EU, and English-speaking.

Why is it blocking?

For Europe, the problem is that Apple Intelligence as it is currently designed does not seem to meet the criteria ofDMA.You can learn more about it here.

Regarding the Chinese government, it wants to force Apple to choose a local service provider, andnot an American company.
