While Apple has just deployedbeta versions of iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1for developers who integrate Apple Intelligence, we learn that some beta testers cannot take advantage of it as they wish.
When a new macOS beta is rolled out, some people rush to install it, despite the risks involved. The majority of users, however, prefer to wait until the final version comes out. To avoid being victims of the inconveniences involved in a beta version, and to take advantage of the new features, the smartest install it on an external hard drive. Unfortunately it seems thatThis tip does not allow you to take advantage of Apple Intelligence.
Apple Intelligence is only on the internal hard drive
You can install the macOS 15.1 beta on an external hard drive, but if you try to add Apple Intelligence to it, the process will fail. Apple does offer an option to install Apple Intelligence, but itonly works on the Mac's internal hard drive. 9to5mac reports on this:
9to5Mac then found an alert message in the Xcode beta that explicitly states that the code prediction feature “is not available when booting from an external drive.” Based on system logs viewed by 9to5Mac, it appears this restriction applies to all Apple Intelligence features.
It is not known whether the measure is temporary or permanent. Limiting the use of Apple Intelligence to the internal hard drive likely allows Apple to ensure user security.
What solution?
To test Apple Intelligence without touching your current operating system, a solution might be to do it using volumesAPFS, directly from your Mac's internal hard drive. Partitioning the hard drive is also possible, but Apple advises against it and instead recommends APFS volumes.
