Apple is still in discussions with Google to integrate Gemini into the next iOS update. With WWDC just a few weeks away, the future of the iPhone has never been more uncertain. According to several sources, Apple should take advantage of this conference to update its AI system and provide generative features.
At the same time, Apple is reportedly still negotiating with Google to add Gemini as an option to iPhones. Bloomberg agency journalist Mark Gurman nevertheless warns that this functionality will not be presented in June. It could therefore arrive in a later updated’iOS 18.
Apple plays both sides
Still according to information from Mark Gurman, Apple is playing on two sides. The Apple brand is reportedly in discussions with Google to integrate Gemini into the iPhone, but another generative AI will overshadow it. It is nothing less than ChatGPT which should arrive in June in the smartphones of the bitten apple.
Apple has reportedly discussed in recent weeks with the management of Open AI,reaching an agreementa few days ago. The Cupertino company is expected to announce this partnership during WWDC, during its opening speech broadcast live to the world.
Open AI is not enough
In his report, Mark Gurman takes the time to explain Apple's choice to double its solutions. According to its own analysis, the Cupertino company cannot be enough of Open AI. The arrival of generative artificial intelligence in the iPhone will be the novelty of the year for Apple. The brand cannot afford to leave this key functionality to one company. Especially since Open AI does not have an immaculate reputation.
It is therefore to cover its rear and ensure the proper functioning of its products that Apple is asking Google to take part in this project. If Open AI were to be less efficient, less popular or affected by a scandal, Apple could quickly break away from Sam Altman's company.
Apple wants its own AI
The other solution for Apple is to produce its own AI internally. If this idea has made headway in recent months, the Apple brand would still be far from the mark and Apple's generative AI is simply not up to par.
Using Open AI and Google's Gemini would therefore be a solution for Apple which could save time before presenting its own AI. For Gurman there is no doubt. These partnerships allow Apple to “buy time”, while waitingthe arrival of its own AI.
