The reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who often hits the mark, has just published a new report in which he claims that Apple plans to release iPads and MacBooks witha Mini-LED display, between the end of 2020 and mid-2021.
According to him, each Micro-LED display will use approximately 10,000 LEDs, while the Pro Display
The iPad and MacBook models that would use these new displays would have screen sizes of 10-12 inches and 15-17 inches, respectively. He also expects this to be on high-end machines, because of the high price of the Mini-LED display, so it would likely be iPad Pro and MacBook Pro.
Apple plans to migrate from OLED to Mini-LED (or Micro-LED) for its products in the future. Because this new screen technology has several advantages compared to OLED: lightness, finesse, better brightness, but also better energy management.
The MicroLED display also offers a wide color gamut, high contrast, high dynamic range and local brightness control. All of these factors are of interest to Apple for its products.
This would also allow Apple to be less dependent on suppliers, such as Samsung for the OLED screens which currently equip its iPhones.
According to the analyst, Apple plans to release the iPad with Mini-LED screen between the last quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021, followed by the MacBook between the first and second quarters of 2021.
