- Meta announces Quest 3 mixed reality headset
- The device is more powerful and has a better screen
- All games compatible with the Quest 2 are compatible with its successor
Meta (ex-Facebook) has just unveiled a new virtual reality headset, theQuest 3. Based on Oculus VR technology, it offers better image quality than its predecessor, for a price set at only569,99 eurosfor 128 GB of internal storage compared to more than 3,000 euros expected for the alternative that Apple is preparing on the sly. This should see the light of day no later than during the Worldwide Developer Conference, which begins Monday at 7 p.m. with a keynote broadcast live on YouTube.
The Quest 3 will be available this fall, and if its technical characteristics are not yet known precisely it is because a more detailed presentation is expected onSeptember 27during the Meta Connect event. That is to say a calendar relatively close to the potential release date of Cupertino's Reality Pro, if we are to believe the most persistent rumors about it.
More powerful than ever
Meta explains that the Quest 3 is powered by a chipSnapdragonfrom Qualcomm, the same brand that already powers hundreds of millions of smartphones around the globe. Samsung, Xiaomi and even Motorola already trust it for their own devices of this type. The graphics processor, in particular, would offer renderings twice as fast with the new headset.
The Meta Quest Pro is also equipped with ahigher resolution panelto that of the second generation, whose graphics can be superimposed on the user's environment in augmented reality. But that's not all, since comfort has also been improved with a format no less than 40% more compact! Enough to wear eyewear for longer, an advantage on whichseemsalso having worked Apple for its alternative, thanks in particular to the talent of Jony Ive.
Everything for gaming
With the Meta Quest 3, gamers will be able to access a catalog of more thanfive hundred gamesin virtual reality (the same as for the Quest 2). Beyond the design of the frame, what's more, it is also the controllers which have seen their format revisited from top to bottom. The trend is now towards zero distraction.
At the same time, Meta also announced that theQuest 2 will see its price dropfrom June 4 in the United States, therefore remaining marketed alongside its successor. We are talking here about only $299.99 compared to $399.99 currently for the version with 128 GB of memory. The equivalent in euros for mainland France is not yet known, but with the bill currently set at 449.99 euros, we can assume that the Quest 2 will go down to 349.99 euros here on Sunday.
