Apple updates Big Sur and Catalina for older Macs

Recent Macs can take advantage of macOS Monterey, the latest version of which 12.3 has just been released. Old computers, for reasons of incompatibility or the desire of their users not to update yet, can install a new version of macOS 11.

Indeed, Apple has been offering version 11.6.5 for macOS Big Sur for several hours. This obviously does not bring new features. Despite this, it is advisable to install it, because it corrects numerous security vulnerabilities, more than twenty according to the Californian firm.

Likewise, users under macOS Catalina (macOS 10) can install a new security update namedSecurity Update 2022-003.

  • Impact:Opening a maliciously crafted PDF file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
  • Description:A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved state management.

  • Available for:macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina
  • Impact:Processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to arbitrary code execution
  • Description:A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved validation.

Intel Graphics Driver

  • Available for:macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina
  • Impact:An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges
  • Description:A type confusion issue was addressed with improved state handling.

Kernel

  • Available for:macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina
  • Impact:An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges
  • Description:An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.

There are also fixes for QuickTime, Siri and WebKit.
