Carbon neutrality, not so simple for Apple suppliers

According to a new report published byDigiTimes, the objective set by Apple and consisting of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by2030would be more difficult than expected to achieve. Indeed, this ambition not only takes into account the activities of the firm but also those of its service providers and several other indirect stakeholders.

However, it turns out that several subcontractors such asTSMCwould find it difficult to change their habits in favor of the environment. The founder is now at the origin of the majority of chips powering controlled devices, whether iPads or iPhones but also, for over a year now, computers with Apple silicon processors.

A question of costs?

The main concern encountered by the Taiwanese firm would be that ofenergy cost. It would indeed be difficult for it to invest in greener sources, even if its managers are aware that this is an excellent bet in the long term.

However, a solution seems to be emerging on the horizon, again according to the analysis ofDigiTimes: that of TSMC's own service providers, on whom the group would take advantage of this to put pressure in the same way as Cupertino can do towards it. Objective: to save them money20%more energy by, again, eight years.

One of the world's leading companies

If we are to believe the ranking of the most valuable companies on the planet, TSMC is currently ranked in ninth place with more than700 billion dollars in capitalization.

Apple still remains at the top of the list, after recently exceeding 3,000 billion.
