No Lightning port on iPhones from 2024, that's for sure

The European Parliament has just confirmed the ban on proprietary power ports on wireless headphones and mobile phones by the end of 2024. This means that Apple will no longer be able to offer Lightning port on AirPods or iPhones. Instead, our leaders are forcing the switch to the universal standard ofUSB-C.

In spring 2026, this measure will even extend tocomputers. Cupertino had already taken the plunge with its Macs, but finally chose the return of MagSafe last year. It is difficult to imagine howits 14 or 16 inch machineswill then be able to go back once more, but the manufacturer will have no choice. Indeed, without respecting the decision of the regulators, it could expose itself to financial sanctions or worse: the outright banning of its products on the Old Continent.

Two generations of iPhone protected

In theory, this means that the supposediPhone 15 et iPhone 15 Prowhich should be released next year will be able to continue to offer charging with a Lightning port. The same goes for the following versions, since the new mobiles from the Apple firm are generally released during the fall. On the other hand, then, Apple will have to get up to speed with USB-C…

... or not, because a ready-made alternative seems to be able to get the manufacturer out of trouble. This would involve offering a smartphone equipped with wireless charging only, without any socket at the bottom of the device. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are already equipped with this technology, just like the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhonededicated charger, the price of which often rises to several tens of euros. In addition, it is difficult to make this solution compatible with an external battery sometimes used by travelers on the move, with its essential one-meter cord between the bag and the user's hands.

With this, Parliament also raised the case of other consumer devices which will also have to review their charging policy. These are thetablets(hello iPads), cameras, headsets likeAirPods Max, consoles and even Bluetooth speakers. With just one cable, you should be able to connect all your equipment. Official objective: reduce pollution by generating less waste across Europe.
