Performance: the Apple M1 chip would exceed all expectations

Apple announced its first Macs equipped with the brand new in-house chip last TuesdayApple M1. The latter comes in the form of an SoC, similar to the Ax chips seen on iPhone and iPad. In short, the Apple M1 chip is not just a CPU processor, it is also a graphics processor. It also integrates RAM and underpins other technologies, such as the Neural Engine.

It is announced as powerful, but above all consumes much less energy than a system based on an Intel platform, like old Macs. And the autonomy announced for the first two Mac laptops equipped with the M1 chip show it, on paper: the latter would display thebest battery life a MacBook has ever seen to date, especially the MacBook Pro 13″ compared to the MacBook Air.

But questions still remain. What about the power of the Apple M1 chip? How does it compare to Intel CPUs?

We will have to wait for the first tests of the Apple M1 machines to have answers to all this. Until then, we can only believe the first results of benchmarks already available on the web. And these would herald a real revolution for Macs.

Apple M1 vs Intel Core i9? Thank you goodbye

In fact, for a few days now, scores from the Geekbench 5 test app have been appearingon the Geekbench websitecorresponding to the new MacBooks with Apple Silicon M1 chip.

We learn in passing that this, on MacBook Air, is notably clocked at 3.2 GHz. But the most interesting thing concerns the figures she obtains. In a single-core test, it reaches1 687 points.

This is a massive performance, in the sense that it beats 10th or 9th generation Intel processors seen on iMac 2020 or MacBook Pro 16″ 2019, even though these are clocked at a frequency of upper clock.

In the multi-core test, the Apple M1 chip recorded a score of 7,433 points. This is less good than what other chips can do, like that of the 2019 Mac Pro or that of the iMac Pro. But it’s still better than the 16″ MacBook Pro from 2019 and its 9th generation Intel i9 chip.

Almost identical scores were recorded for the MacBook Pro also equipped with an Apple M1 chip.

Everything therefore suggests that with this change in architecture, Apple chips have the potential torevolutionize the Mac market, and even laptops more widely. Because not only would a MacBook equipped with an Apple M1 chip be more powerful than many of its competitors, but above all, it would have much greater battery life...
