Why buying an iPhone is more environmentally friendly than buying an Android smartphone

If you have had your iPhone for several years, you are not the exception, but rather the norm. This is what we can learn from a recent study published by analysts at Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP).

When iPhone owners hold on to their phones

We thus learn that in 2023, 29% of iPhone owners have kept their device for three years or more, compared to 21% for Android customers. The movement will accelerate further in 2024 and almost a third of iPhone users say they will keep their smartphones for three years or more.

Why do Apple customers cling to these so much? Let us first note that the Apple brand has not offered any decisive new features in recent years, even if this is changing with new AI tools.d’Apple Intelligence. Therefore, it is much less problematic to keep your iPhone for three years or more and users do not feel like they are missing out on an essential innovation.

Price also necessarily comes into play. When you buy a device that costs the equivalent of a minimum wage, you don't necessarily rush to buy another one and you seek to make your investment profitable.

Finally, these devices are now integrated into an ecosystem includingof services(iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV+, App Store. Attachment is therefore essential and you don't necessarily want to change your smartphone as long as it is functional.

Finally, by keeping their phones longer, Apple customers are making an (involuntary) gesture for the planet by limiting electronic waste a little.

Android benefits from competition

It's quite different on the Android side. Therefore, several manufacturers operate this system and regularly offer new options. Changing can therefore quickly become tempting, especially as prices are generally lower than those charged by Apple, which makes the transition to new models much easier.
