Why does Apple refuse to adopt the RCS format? Tim Cook responds

For a while now, Google has been insistently asking Apple to approve the arrival of the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard. This communication system, very similar to SMS, presents a certain number of technological advances by relying on the data network, and not cellular. For now, the Cupertino company still refuses to accept this transition which would provide functionalities similar to those of iMessage.

“Buy your mother an iPhone!” »

The answer is still no, and it was Tim Cook himself who gave his point of view during an interview with Kara Swisher at the Code Conference. The manager explains it very clearly: “I don't see our users asking us to put a lot of energy into this at this point. I would love to convert you to an iPhone».

His interlocutor then explained to him that when his mother uses an Android smartphone, he cannot send her certain videos because of the SMS format. And Tim Cook responds point-for-tat “buy your mother an iPhone!»

We have therefore clearly understood that there is absolutely no question for the Apple brand of backing down on this subject. A real standoff is underway between the two Tech giants, and Apple has no intention of letting go.

However, the pressure is likely to increase over time. As our colleagues at9to5mac, more than 500 million people have already made the switch from SMS to RCS, and this figure will only increase. If this format is used by a very large proportion of users, it could become complicated for Apple to refuse the use of this standard, at least for exchanges between Android and iOS devices.
