Fast charging iPhone 8/X: detailed measurements for choosing your charger (10, 12 watt or more in USB-C?)

While
competing machines have long had a fast charging mode
put forward by the manufacturers, Apple had remained relatively discreet on the
subject so far. However, we saw it a long time ago,
previous iPhones (6, 6s and 7) could already benefit from more charging
fast
than that offered by the small charger delivered with the machine. He
enoughuse an iPad charger(which is clearly
indicated as being iPhone compatible on the Apple website!). But this year,
this is therecharge
fast via USB-C charger
which is highlighted. Is it worth it
coup ?What gain with this type of charger? Here are some
measures that allow us to see things more clearly.

It was Dan Loewenherz who published his measurementson Twitter, they
give several indications.

An undersized standard charger (5W)

First, the purple line shows theload permitted by the
standard charger
(5W) delivered with the iPhone. She is ridiculously
slow compared to other possible solutions.

Which charger to go quickly?

Regarding "fast" charging, you can use a 10 W charger,
the one supplied with the iPads, or the 12 W, which recharges the iPads a little
faster. These are thegray and red curveson the
diagram. The gain compared to the 5W charger is radical. We can thus obtain a
charge of 50% in approximately 40 minutes, where it takes double (80 minutes) with
the mini charger provided.

And to go faster?

What we finally remember is thatthe gain offered by the solution
USB-C exists but is not huge
compared to 10 and 12 W chargers,
even if their power is 29, 61 or even 87 W.

The gain isa few minutes (10 maximum out of 40) to reach 50%
dump
, compared to the 10 W charger solution. As for the
different power of USB-C, between 61 and 87 W, no difference, because
the iPhone limits the intensity it receives to the maximum provided by Apple.

As for reaching 100%, the difference between solutions other than
supplied charger is even more gummed up, because the charge is not linear. Where
it takes 3 hours with the charger provided, it drops to 2h20 with the 10W charger
the iPad, 2 hours with the 12 W and around 1 hour 55 minutes for the others.

Morality:Apple should provide an iPad charger with its
iPhone
(for 3 years), no need to look for more
loin !

If we do not have one, then whatever other solutions there may be
iPad or USB-C charger will do the trick and will be almost
equivalent
for a full recharge. For a half refill, there
has a gain with USB-C, for those in a hurry!

Last clarification following question on previous article: the cable
Lightning, as long as it is MFi certified by Apple, is not limiting for
the load. To read:our file on Lightning cables
iPhone et iPad

To take advantage of “standard” fast charging, multi-port chargers
for example do the trick, as long as they can deliver more than
10 W (multiply the maximum port intensity by 5 volts to get the Watts
issued).

We can cite for example:

Do you use others?
