Can you charge and use an iPhone at the same time without risk?

In the various articles and videos that focus on the iPhone battery, we have noticed a question that comes up very often, and this is precisely the subject on which we investigated in the Apple Store to obtain an answer: does the Does using the iPhone while charging damage the battery?

To find out more, we went to an Apple Store and questioned several Apple employees and technicians. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to record the responses, in video or audio format. At the same time, we also investigated serious sources such as the recognized siteBattery University. Here is what we learned from these two sources.

Not really a big risk, but…

Apple employees and technicians claim that the iPhone was designed and designed to be used while charging. This is indeed a classic use case among smartphone users. However, specialists recommend respecting a few rules of use to preserve the battery.

Some rules to follow

It is thus possible to use the iPhone while it is charging, provided that you carry out simple tasks, those that do not require a lot of resources, to limit the risk of overheating the device. This is because high heat degrades the battery more quickly. Among the tasks that consume little resources, we can mention consulting social networks, browsing the internet, checking emails, listening to music or even watching videos.

Apple technicians therefore advise against resource-intensive tasks during charging, especially when the iOS device is used in direct sunlight and/or heat.In these situations, it is better to avoid online games with 3D graphics, video calls, downloads or even GPS navigation, while recharging.

The classic trio “charging + GPS + sun” can often be found in the car, when going on summer vacation, with iPhone fixed on the windshield. I have already seen the iPhone turn off in the middle of GPS guidance on Google Maps because of too much heat in traffic jams on motorways. And there, it's waiting for many minutes for the hot-to-the-touch device to start up again after having cooled down sufficiently...

It is in these cases that it may be a good idea, if possible, to attach your iPhone to a support attached to the car's ventilation (like these), to cool both the driver and the iOS device.

Be careful with iPhone protection

Be aware that some protective cases tend toretain the heat given off by the iPhone. It may then be recommended, in risky situations (charging and sunlight for example), to remove all protection to allow better heat dissipation.

Finally, according to battery technology researchers at Battery University, the worst situation is that of the battery being 100% charged, but with the charging cable still connected and high surrounding heat. In this case, it is rather advisable to avoid using the smartphone.

Note that this is notno rules to follow literally, but to keep in mind and apply in risky situations to protect your iOS device against heat and limit the impact of high temperatures on battery aging. For example, there's nothing stopping you from playing your favorite game with the iPhone charging, if you realize that the device isn't that warm to the touch.

But with temperatures likely to be around 40° this summer, departures on vacation on the hot roads of France shortly, or even stays at the beach in full sun, the iPhone risks suffering.Prevention is better than cure.
