iOS 14 will finally allow you to choose default applications!

Do you remember the historic legal battle between Microsoft and European and American regulatory authorities? At the time, lawmakers forced Redmond to impose the choice ofdefault browserof Windows to its Internet users, whereas previously Internet Explorer was offered automatically. A situation which is reminiscent of the predominance of Safari within the operating systems marketed by Apple on its devices,and which has been calling on the European Commission for several months now.

But for once, Cupertino did not wait to receive a fine of several million dollars to react: the firm added inthe list of new features of iOS 14that the software would now let its customers opt for the browser of their choice. An additional advantage for Chrome and Firefox, respectively renowned for their interoperability and their respect forconfidentiality. From there to seeing an unprecedented restructuring of market shares on the App Store?

Why Safari should have nothing to fear

In reality, it's hard to believe that Apple's proprietary solution has any problem facing the alternatives from Alphabet and Mozilla. Indeed :

• Safari has a major advantage: it is compatible with features linked toContinuityof the ecosystem of headed products
• many believe in the privacy guarantees promised by Apple on this browser
• the latest Safari update, with extensions,security toolsand arrival of favicons now makes it as complete as theconcurrence
• Safari is particularlyfluidand optimized for ARM processors in iPhones and iPads because both are designed by the same team (soon Macs too with the Apple Silicon transition announced at WWDC 2020)
• the majority of Apple users trust the apps installed as standard on their device, which they are less likely to personalize than with Android
