Augmented Reality: Google launches its competing ARkit iOS solution

Apple created a surprise by
last May with one of the functions of iOS 11. This is ARkit, a set of
programming guidelines to facilitate development
of applications mixing reality as seen by the camera of an iPhone or
of an iPad and 3D objects or characters. We immediately felt a
certain enthusiasm of the developers who havemultiplied the
videos showing current projects, to be found here
. All this should be
materialize with the release of iOS 11 next month, the apps will then be
offered on the App Store.

On the other hand, Google previously offered relatively similar functions
but within the frameworkof the so-called “tango” projectrequiringa measuring device
distances added or integrated into the smartphone
. Big artillery
compared to Apple's 100% software solution. The giant had to react and
just did it by releasing ARCore, its own SDK dedicated to reality
increased
.

In the same way as at Apple, the applications which will take advantage of
CoreKit will only need the camera to be able to display 3D creations
in the user's real environment. For this, the kit integrates everything
necessary in order to follow the positioning of the user in a room, the
surface detection and light management which makes it possible to display
consistent shadows.

ARCore will not be compatible with all Android smartphones at
startup, but with the Pixel and the Galaxy S8 as long as they have the OS
Android 7 Nougat (released last year but
still little deployed as we could see here
.

It remains to be hoped for the developers and therefore for us users, that
the two platforms are close enough to avoid excessive developments
different on both sides!

This time it's certain, 2017 should be the year ofaugmented reality.

Don't missthe superb achievements in preparation
for the release of iOS 11 next month
