iPhon.fr reader survey result: an iPhone aged 2 years or more for more than half of you, and other information

Recent smartphone market analysts, like this one, mention atendency towards a lengthening renewal cycle. Users would no longer wait 2 years before changing their iPhone, but 3 years from now on,see maybe soon 4. Several reasons are put forward to explain this lengthening: seesome factors that may be involved. It would therefore become common tokeep an iPhone for several years, and have in 2019 an iPhone 6s or SE from 2015 in your pocket, or even an iPhone 6 from 2014.

To check if this applied to you iPhon.fr readers,A few days ago we launched a survey here. Here are thenumerical results, with some perspectives based on your comments (Thank you!):

The question was: “When did you buy your current iPhone?". Seven answers were then possible: “This year (2019)”, “Last year (2018)”, “In 2017”, “2016”, “2015”, “2014”, or even older with the last answer “ It’s even older.”

The results

Here is the proportion per year of purchase of your iPhone:

  • Purchase in 2019: 10%
  • in 2018: 38%
  • 2017 : 24,2 %
  • 2016 : 12,2 %
  • 2015 : 8,3 %
  • 2014 : 5,5 %
  • avant 2014 : 1,8 %

What is most striking is theiPhone peak from 2018 (38%). But the year 2017 was also quite conducive to renewal according to your answers.

It is further possible to see that52% of you have a smartphone that is 2 years old or older.

Etfor one in three readers, the iPhone is 3 years old or more.

Finally, 10% of you bought an iPhone this year.

Comments and analysis

Inyour comments to read here, many of you aresatisfied with your machine, even if it is several years old, whether iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, but also iPhone SE.

As for those who have changed recently, they have mainly done so to upgrade to a new generation iPhone with “full screen”: X/XR/XS. And that seems pretty logical. Indeed, with the iPhone X and the new 2018 models, Apple hasdrastically changed design.

Before that, with the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and even iPhone 8, the changes weremore minor.

You also tend to agree with the different reasons for keeping your iPhone longer and longer.

Autonomy is particularly an important point. As long as the machine holds up at this level, why change?

Ditto for the power of the machine, iPhones, even quite old, support the transition toiOS 12. Apple notably highlighted this point during the launch of this version of iOS, highlighting the work carried out by its engineers to allowold iPhone to regain acceptable responsiveness.

High prices and lack of innovation

Factors inherent to new products also have an influence. Without any big surprises, you note that the new machines are displayed athigh prices, which obviously does not facilitate frequent renewal. In addition, developments from year to year are judgednot very notable. It is therefore better to wait several generations of iPhone before investing a large sum for a new device and thus maximize the lifespan of your investment.

However, we canhighlight the large number of iPhone equipment in 2018. You are near40% bought or renewed your iPhone last year. There is no doubt that the release of the new iPhone XR and XS played a role, as well as the availability of the 2017 iPhone X at a reduced price.

This year's iPhones should not experience any major changes with a range that would once again offer 3 devices. Findhere the rumors about the 2019 iPhones.

Do you plan to equip yourself this year, after how many years for your current iPhone?

Thank you everyone for participating. Find our previous surveys andtheir results here.
