A laser telemetry system for augmented reality on the iPhone in 2019?

The iPhone X is the first
model in the range to integrate a TrueDepth camera on the front, which allows
to perform a 3D capture of the face, which is used for
facial recognition with Face ID. Apple could well add another
3D camera on the back of a future iPhone.

Indeed, according to a new report published by the American newspaper
Bloomberg, Apple would be working on atelemetry system
laser
for augmented reality forthe iPhone from
2019
.

This 3D camera would be different from the TrueDepth camera located in
front of the iPhone
the user to unlock the device or validate a payment with
Apple Pay.

The iPhone X system incorporates a dot projector for these purposes, which
sends 30,000 invisible dots onto the face to create a "facial map" and
an infrared camera that will read this card.

However, the laser telemetry system envisaged by Apple would use a
approach "travel time" with a sensor that would project
andlaser ricocheting off nearby objectsin order to calculate and
create a3D image of the environmentof the user.

This would greatlyimprove reality skills
increased
of the iPhone, which since iOS 11 with the ARKit framework
allows developers to offerappsand
games with
augmented reality
e.

ARKit works pretty well with flat surfaces for placing objects
above, on the other hand he has more difficulty with vertical surfaces, such as
doors or walls, due to lack of depth perception.

This 3D camera system would solve these problems and
transform the iPhone into a real augmented reality tool, which would be more
accurate in many cases.

For the moment this technology is still at the beginning of the testing phase, it
could very well be abandoned and never be implemented in a
Apple device according to the results of the first tests in particular.
