iCloud Scan: Apple's idea is not at all popular

It was with a simple press release that Apple set the scene on fire this weekend on the web. While the Cupertino company had just announced the implementation during this year of a new functionality in iOS 15, allowing you to scan photos on iCloud andcompare them with the database of missing or exploited children, an outcry appeared on the web.

If Apple's initial desire was to use iCloud to combat child crime, a very noble cause, many saw in this new action by the firm a lowering of standards in terms of privacy protection. It must be said that the Apple brand is known for putting the confidentiality of personal data on a pedestal.

A point that the most famous defender of individual rights on the internet, the whistleblower Edward Snowden, did not forget to recall. The former NSA who revealed the biggest computer confidentiality scandal a few years ago did not fail to call Apple to order.

EFF says it is “disappointed” by Apple

Like him, the organization for the protection of computer freedoms EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) warns Apple onthis new feature and the consequences it could have on millions of people. In a press release, the NGO is very scathing against the Cupertino company, which it held up a few weeks ago as a model for other internet giants.“To say we are disappointed with Apple’s plans is an understatement.”If the organization recognizes and welcomes Apple's desire, the latter could open the door to“wider abuses”.

To conclude, EFF asks Apple to abandon its update project. The organization explains that it is impossible to set up such a system without violatingthe laws that Apple has imposed on itself regarding confidentiality.
