With now nearly fifty million viewers according to the most recent statistics, Apple TV+ has quickly positioned itself as one of the key players in the television market.video on demand. But the different productions available on the platform are becoming more and more numerous, so much so that it becomes difficult to make a choice despite the suggestions.
After sanding the catalog, we took the time to choose the best nuggets. Between foreign and French series, dramas and comedies, fiction and documentaries, here are our favorites.
1 –WeCrashed
WeCrashedtakes into account the incredible fall ofWeWorkand its star founder, Adam Neumann. The CEO, fired by his investors after a failed IPO, managed the company in a rather frivolous manner, with Tequila, magic mushrooms and buyouts of wave pools. Closer to reality, the series reveals how the young Israeli prodigy was able to convince with an enchanting speech but based on unflattering figures.
In the casting, we find nothing less thanJared Leto(Requiem for a Dream,Panic Room,Dallas Buyers Club) etAnne Hathaway(The Devil Wears Prada,The Dark Knight Rises,Princess in spite of herself) in the title roles. Alongside them, the poster is notably completed by America Ferrera (Four girls and jeans,The war of the fathers,Superstore) et Anthony Edwards (Top Gun,Designated Survivor,Emergency call).
2 –Extrapolations
Just released,Extrapolationstakes place in the near future where theglobal warminghas clearly proven itself – even if we can already see its very serious consequences today. Sometimes the series explores how the west coast of the United States must cope with rising water levels, sometimes it is the preservation of protected species that raises questions.
This pre-apocalyptic fiction reminds us to what extent protecting the environment is positioned as the issue of our century, with actors of choice who change according to the episodes. Among these, we findSienna Miller(Interview,American Sniper,Layer Cake),Meryl Streep(Death suits you so well,Pentagon Papers,The Dame de Fer),Kit Harington(Game of Thrones,Pompeii,Youth memories) or the FrenchMarion Cotillard(Taxi,The Kid,Of rust and bone)
3 –Prehistoric Planet
In a completely different register, the docu-fictionPrehistoric Planettakes place, as one can imagine from its title, well before our era and more precisely when thedinosaursstill populated our planet. Narrated by the famous British scientistDavid Attenborough, the episodes take us in turn to meet the tyrannosaurus, mosasaurs and pterodactyls.
Recommended for all audiences, the series gives pride of place to superb models of these now extinct animals and will be suitable for both young people and elders. Nothing better to have a good time with the family, especially since the music which accompanies the images is by Hans Zimmer.
4 –The Shrink Next Door
The Shrink Next Door, which is based on a true story, tells howa psychotherapist takes advantage of the weaknesses of one of his patients to influence his decisions and, ultimately, manipulate him. This black comedy, where the doctor (Paul Rudd) takes maximum advantage of the victim (Will Ferrell) via strategies each more Machiavellian than the last, clearly has what it takes to be among the best of the genre – despite only eight short episodes. .
In production, alongside Apple of course, we also find Adam Countee, already seen behind the success ofSilicon Valley, ofCommunityand ofThe Mindy Project. At his side, Ethan Kuperberg (Transparent,Pachinko,Doppelgänger) et Herman Lopez (Dr Death: the incredible true story,Do No Harm,Joe vs. Carole) complete the leading team.
5 –Liaison
First French series in our selection, the thrillerLiaisonarrived on February 24 on Apple TV+.Vincent Casselwas chosen for the main role, after having already delighted us withHate,A moment of confusionand the diptychThe Death Instinct/Public Enemy #1recounting the end of the robber Jacques Mesrine in the 1970s.
InLiaison, Cassel andEva Green(Kingdom of Heaven,Miss Peregrine and the Peculiar Children,Casino Royale) mingle in a delicate intrigue where terrorists and spies keep us in suspense. Few missteps for this production produced in the company of our neighbors across the Channel, with notable scenes in Dunkirk and London.
6 –Dickinson
Everything that is most anachronistic, whether in its general tone or its catchy music,Dickinsonplunges us into a virtual nineteenth century where the famouspoetesstortured woman of the same name must deal with her dark thoughts as well as a toxic family environment. Recognized for her talent only after her death, the author reveals herself here in a surprisingly colorful interpretation by Hailee Steinfled.
Dickinsonis unfortunately already over, but the three seasons are clearly worth the detour and the freedom taken with reality never ceases to brilliantly surprise the viewer. We will perhaps only regret the lack of documentation on mental health issues, which arise throughout the series and deserve more attention.
8 – Price and availability
Apple TV+ is available for6.99 euros per monthsince theiPhone, iPads, iPod touches, Apple TV boxes and Macs. By purchasing an Apple device of this type, if it is new, it is however possible to benefit from a free three-month subscription.
