After the success of Pokémon Go, Niantic studios are expected to turn the corner, and that's an understatement to say. Even more so when they decided to tackle one of the most popular universes, seen in books and in cinema in particular: that of the sorcererHarry Potter. Their new game in preparation for several months is calledHarry Potter: Wizard Unite. Arriving Friday, June 21 in the US and UK only, it has just launched in 25 additional countries, includingFrance.
Some lucky journalistshad already been able to try the game some time ago, even if it was not yet really finished.
Just by the reputation of the studio creating the game, Niantic, but also by the weight of the Harry Potter license, it would be difficult not to see this as a great potential success on mobile.
Especially since the game embraces, like Pokémon Go, theaugmented reality. However, it clearly does not exploitthe new features of ARKit that iOS 13 will introduce, seen here, unlike thenext Minecraft game. It should rather model how Pokémon Go works in this area, with virtual elements seen simply as a superimposition of reality.
It is precisely about going on an adventure in the real surroundings around your home, to capture magical creatures and objects using your magic wand. The game also offers some kinds of challenges to be done together and including imposing bosses to defeat.
Each player obviously gains experience through their victories and captures of magical beasts. In particular, he can improve his spells, but also unlock new ones.
We therefore see some inspiration from Pokémon Go in this new Harry Potter game from Niantic. Let's hope that the differences between the two titles remain sufficiently marked so that the second is not just a copy of the first, under the guise of a change of universe.
The game is availablefor freeon iPhone and iPad. Note that it includes in-app purchases.
