With 574 million active accounts,Spotifyis the leading online music streaming platform in terms of users, but it is notnot the one that does the best when it comes to audio quality. This is to the detriment of experienced music lovers, who expect much more from the platform. This is the case of journalist Chris Welch ofThe Verge, who shares in a post his regret at the delay in the arrival of Hi-Fi and lossless audio. Like many people, he would like to be able to use his various earphones, headsets and speakers to their maximum capacity onSpotify, but the platform still does not allow it.
As a reminder, Hi-Fi refers tosuperior sound reproduction quality, almost identical to the original, without noise or distortion disturbing the sound signal. Concerning lossless audio, it defines a type of compression of the audio file which maintains the original quality of the song, without loss.
They are also two different processes.. An audio file can therefore be both at the same time. However, it happens that for marketing purposes, through abuse of language, certain platforms use the terms inappropriately.
3 years and still nothing
While Apple Music,Amazon Music, etTidal, offer their users high quality audio formats,Spotifytrain. It has now been three years, since March 2021, that Daniel Ek's firm announced superior audio quality coming to its platform, but we are still waiting. The feature is so anticipated that Chris Welch ofThe Vergehas made a paper every year since the announcement to say that it is still not there.
On his sideChris Welch, like many fans of high-resolution music, has opted for Apple Music, which meets its expectations in this area. However, he lets it be known that he will not hesitate to return to the green music platform once a superior format is offered. This should be the casethanks to the future Superpremium subscription that we presented to you in October, but no release date has been announced for the latter.
Why is it so long?
For three years, our colleague fromThe Vergestill can't find an answer to his question:“what’s taking so long?” »In this kind of situation, think in terms of profitability and growthcould perhaps offer an answer.
Despite its seniority,Spotifycontinues to operate as a startup and primarily optimizes growth. She focuses her work on what directly impacts its turnover, and therefore its number of users. The latter continues to grow, even without offering a superior audio format. Especially sincein 2023, Spotify has gained more users than Apple Music, which nevertheless offers better sound quality. The firm should not be in any more of a hurry than that to deploy its superpremium subscription, which as a reminder should be billed around €20 per month.
By observing other popular apps likeNetflixorTinder, we notice that they have not started to review their subscription formulasonly after experiencing a drop in users. We only hopeSpotifywill not follow the same path and that it will deploy its package before, because otherwise, we could wait a long time.
