Starlink wants to compete with fiber with an offer of less than €30

Satellite internet serviceStarlinkof Elon Musk's eponymous company has just reached a new level in France. After a successful first deployment, Starlink is moving up a gear and the company wants to compete with fiber with an offer of less than 30 euros per month.

With this new “Deprioritized” offer (which has just arrived in Spain and Italy), the subscription is only 29 euros per month, compared to the 40 requested by Starlink for the “classic” offer of the 'business. A price that allows you to compete with internet offers via fiber available from traditional ISPs, but does Starlink really offer significant advantages over fiber in France?

Starlink, still limited speed

To quickly answer the question asked just above: no, Starlink is still far from being able to compete with fiber in terms of internet speed in particular. With its “Deprioritized” offer which has just arrived at less than 30 euros per month, the brand promises a connection of between 50 and 100 Mbps during peak hours. The slightly more expensive package, at 40 euros per month, offers a speed of between 150 and 250 Mbps.

For the moment the Starlink constellation, which uses nearly6000 satellites in low orbitto send internet is used by 2.3 million customers. In France, several independent tests showed that the average speed was around 108 Mbps. This is much less than fiber, which generally runs around 350 Mbps.

Improvements to come

The other big factor to take into account when taking out a subscription to Starlink is the cost of the dish (and some work that may be necessaryfor its installation). The latter is currently sold at 225 euros, but it benefits from a reduction, its initial price being 450 euros.

Taking out a subscription with Starlink therefore does not amount to equipping yourself with a traditional internet access provider like the operators in France. The offer is not yet aimed at everyone, and it should still have difficulty competing with fiber.

Starlink, however, manages to offer unprecedented coverage of the territory, particularly areas which have not yet received fiber, although they are fewer and fewer in number.
