Test: why the iPhone XS outperforms the iPhone XR in 4G transmission speed

The iPhone XR and the iPhone XS have a lot of similarities, for example the same A12 chip or the same wide-angle lens. As a result, this makes it possible to obtain equivalent performances in certain aspects, as we saw yesterdayin the benchmarks.

There are, however, quite notable differences. We can mention the price, the use of aluminum instead of steel on the iPhone XR, or even the modem chip. PCMag found ina cell speed test, whichiPhone XS is superior to iPhone XR, provided you are on a compatible network.

According to theiPhone XR technical sheet, the modem chip supports the same 4G as the iPhone X last year. While the iPhone XS is equipped with a modem chip supporting4G Gigabit, a faster version.

PCMag tested both iPhones on a 4G Gigabit-compatible network in the United States. It was observed a download speedalmost twice as faston the iPhone XS. In this aspect, the iPhone XR hasperformance equivalent to iPhonelast year.

This difference is explained by the fact that the iPhone XS and XS Max support 4×4 MIMO, while the iPhone XR is limited to 2×2 MIMO. This 4×4 MIMO is necessary for using 4G Gigabit.

PCMag also observed that in cases of poor cellular reception, the iPhone XS managed to maintain good bandwidth for longer than the iPhone XR.

Apple has revised the position of the antennas on the iPhone XS and XS Max, including two antennas on the upper and lower edges (near the speakers). This provision is necessary for the use of 4G Gigabit.

However, to benefit from it, you must be on a network compatible with 4G Gigabit, except for the momentno French operator supports this. This should happencourant 2019, in some large French cities.
