Far-fetched theory or real decadence? The end of an Apple service questions

Last year, Mobilegamer.biz published astudyscathing about the terms of use of the App Store. Today, the site is back with a new file bringing together testimonies from otherdevelopers, this time not very optimistic about the future of Apple Arcade. The on-demand gaming service, a competitor to the late Google Stadia and Amazon Luna, allows iPhone users to download hundreds of titles with a single monthly plan. The base price was set at 4.99 euros per month during the first quarters of activity of the platform, which now costs 6.99 euros per month.

Among the rather worrying feedback on Apple Arcade, some explain that the hostwould have canceled many projectslinked to the catalog. Revenues from in-app purchase sales would also be in free fall, while few original new features would be added to the game library. For comparison, it is true that Apple TV+, for example, seems to be developing much more quickly, notably making the front page of our columns at least once a week. The streaming offering is certainly still far from the competition in terms of market share, but Arcade would clearly not do any better.

Does it heat up internally?

Even more scathing, another testimony explains that in speaking with employees of the Apple Arcade department, the latter seemed to wonder if they would still have a job in the future. In other words: the platform would be at a standstill, and could close its doors overnight. So here: this strangely reminds us of the monster slowdowns that the project would have sufferedApple Carlately...

For its part, Cupertino has not confirmed the file. But it is true that despitesome encouragement displayed, the service has apparently never shared any particularly significant statistics, whether with the general public or with specialized investors.

However, the promise has something to seduce. Apple Arcade is thus available on many different types of devices: iPad, Mac, iPhone, iPod touch or even Apple TV allow you to enjoy its titles. Not all of them are compatible with every operating system and Android or Windows are left out, but who cares. Note also that many very famous franchises are in the game, with for exampleTamagotchi Adventure Edition,Disney Dreamlight Valley,Subway Surfers Tag,Crossy Road Castleor evenAsphalt 8: Airborne+in the catalog. These are brands that already bring together millions of mobile gamers, the format also allowing Apple to boast a position as the world number one in gaming. Yes: iOS in-app purchases earn much more than PlayStation Network purchases, to name just one alternative.

New products are still announced regularly

As a reminder, it is also via Apple Arcade that you can enjoy several titles playable with a Vision Pro mixed reality headset.Jetpack JoyrideetFruit Ninja, not to mention some NBA basketball games, are available on the App Store for visionOS in virtual reality. However, we do not know precisely the number of games available in the catalog, but in 2021 Cupertino was already talking about more than two hundred apps. Because, yes, concretely, you should know that Apple Arcade is not a native application but the simple name of the subscription. Users must download each game's app onto their device;we are therefore not in the presence of a streaming solutionlike with Shadow or certain Microsoft packages.

  • Apple Arcade is growing slowly, so much so that some fear for its survival
  • Developers who spoke with Apple employees in charge of the service believe that the latter will “die”
  • However, Apple has not at all announced the end of Apple Arcade and continues to launch new games regularly; the publishers' allegations must therefore be considered with caution
