Major changes are underway at Twitter, since the arrival of Elon Musk. And among these changes, there is the creation of a new formula for the paid subscription of the microblogging platform.
As a reminder, Twitter already offered a paid subscription, called Twitter Blue, before the takeover by Musk. However, the American billionaire wants to increase the price of this subscription to 8 dollars, and allow users of this subscription to have the famous blue verification (or certification) badge.
A new gray badge for official accounts, installed, then removed
After this announcement, Internet users wondered how we would distinguish between a simple Twitter Blue subscriber with a blue badge, and official or certified accounts, such as those of governments or large companies.
It is to make this distinction that Twitter imagined the implementation of two badges: the blue one for its premium subscribers, and the gray one to certify so-called “official” accounts.
“Many people have asked how you will be able to distinguish between @TwitterBlue followers with blue checkmarks and accounts verified as official, which is why we are introducing the “Official” label to select accounts when we launch.”, said Esther Crawford, a Twitter employee, in a publication. She also shared a screenshot showing this new badge (under the Twitter username).

Twitter wanted to be more selective for the gray badge, while still making it easier for people to have the blue badge.
“Accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures”, says Crawford.
But a few hours after these first announcements yesterday concerning the “grey badge formula”, the gray badges simply disappeared from the Twitter pages of those concerned. Elon Musk had just completely canceled the deployment of this new feature:

This back and forth symbolizes the situation Twitter finds itself in at the moment: a total blur. In this sense, Elon Musk testified that he wanted to try ideas with the social network, without ever refraining from deploying them and then throwing them away as quickly as the launch of a new update for Tesla cars.
Among the next functionalities envisaged, there is particular mention of the possibility of publishing long texts. Another change mentioned:the Vine application bought by Twitter a few years ago could return shortly. The final goal is to make Twitter more attractive to creators, keeping in mind the idea of competing with the monetization offered by YouTube.
