A 5G chip designed by Apple in the iPhone? Not before 2022

According to the latest rumors, the next iPhone models in 2020 should have a 5G chip from Qualcomm. Last April, Apple and Qualcomm buried the hatchet and managed to find common ground to resolve their differences.

A licensing agreement has been concluded between the two companies, for the next six years, so that Apple can use Qualcomm's 5G chips in its future iPhones.

At the same time last July, Apple bought Intel's modem division for $1 billion. This acquisition will allow Apple to accelerate by several years the design of its own modem chips and the integration into its mobile devices.

According to a new report from Fast Company, Apple is targeting 2022 to integrate its first 5G modem chip designed in-house. This would have several advantages, including optimizing performance, with a component that would be designed to work optimally with iOS.

Designing a high-performance 5G modem chip is, however, a complicated task; it will take some time, even with this acquisition of Intel's modem business.

If we base ourselves on the performance of the AX chips which are much superior to the competition, we imagine that Apple's 5G chip could be a cut above other 5G chips.

In addition, this would allow Apple to no longer be dependent on a supplier like Qualcomm, and to offer an iPhone with better 5G performance.

In the meantime, the 2020 models would be the first to integrate a 5G chip from Qualcomm, but also perhaps from Samsung.
