- WhatsApp is testing voice rooms
- Only the beta version for Android is eligible for now
- On iOS, we don't yet know when this feature will arrive.
WhatsApp is currently testing voice rooms, similar to what Discord offers, for example. But the functionality is primarily in development for Android, and only in beta version for the moment. Indeed,Meta, the developer, first offers its updates on the Google Play Store. You will therefore have to wait to be entitled to this change on iOS.
What are voice rooms?
Concretely, voice chat rooms are oral discussions that are closer to groups, but preferring audio messages to text. The principle is certainly very similar to that of a call to several people, but here there is no classic ringtone to alert you that the exchanges have started. No, instead you receive a simple notification asking you to join your contacts. You are free to do it now, later, or not at all.
We don't yet know the precise ins and outs of this new feature, but it's a safe bet that only thirty-two users will be able to join a voice lounge. With this, end-to-end encryption is included, offering an additional guarantee of confidentiality in the face of potential spyware. Let us remember, however, that zero risk does not exist, as Pegasus orGrayshiftin the past.
Some specifics to know
In all likelihood, voice rooms that remain inactive for sixty minutes will be muted by WhatsApp. We do not yet know the exact name of the feature in French, but literally the publisher speaks of “discussion vocale” with the beta version currently being tested.
You can install version 2.23.16.19 of WhatsApp on Android to try this new feature, via the Play Store early access program. Please note, however, that access to the functionality is not guaranteed: it seems that the deployment is gradual, so that some users, although indeed registered for the beta, cannot yet benefit from it.
