113 million phones are lying dormant in French drawers

The reconditioning expert E-Recycle has just published a figures report on the smartphone market in France, and more particularly on the recycling of phones. E-Recycle points out the fact that many smartphones are sleeping in drawers, when they could be reused, recycled, or reconditioned. According to the data,78% of the digital sector's carbon footprintis directly linked to the manufacturing of devices.

Recycling is still little considered

The study tells us that in France,87% of the population owns a smartphone. By counting only citizens over 12 years old, this figure rises to 94%. In 2023, these are21.3 million phones that have been soldIn France. Among smartphone users, 84% say they bought it less than three years ago, while62% of them still had a working phoneat the time of change. Thus, we countmore than 113 million unused mobile devices sitting in drawers.

Despite the environmental benefits it brings, recycling is neglected by French citizens. Barely5% of smartphones are recycledat the end of use, while the majority of French people,67% according to the report, have never considered this alternative.

The French, however, seem to have a growing interest in reconditioning, for several reasons. Those questioned about the advantages mainly cite three arguments: the price for 66% of respondents, the environment for 43% and the guarantee for 42%.
