2023: state of play of market shares for video streaming

The JustWatch site has just published a study where we discover which are the most popular video on demand platforms in the United States. These are of course estimates, but the trend retained seems to correspond to other most recent statistics of this kind. We learn in particular that Amazon Prime Video would be number one in the sector, with no less than 22% (+ 1%) market share in total. Compared to 21% (+ 1%) market share for Netflix, previously the market leader for a long time.

Apple TV+, the competing service from Cupertino, would be satisfied with only 7% (+ 1%) of market share. But this does not mean that its offer is lagging behind, far from it. Indeed, although its catalog actually lists far fewer titles available to users, they remain particularly high quality and have already been praised by critics. There are many choice actors and directors, the feature filmCODAeven winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The work is a remake ofThe Aries Family.

Mickey losing momentum

At Disney+, however, the situation would not necessarily be looking good. It seems in fact that the app is limited to 12% market share today. However, although this score remains better than that of Apple TV+, it would be down 1% compared to the previous quarter.

But the return of Bob Iger at the head of the Disney group could change everything. The former CEO will in fact have been recalled by the board of directors, to try to redress the situation at a time of very disappointing results for the company's investors. It also presents itself as the parent company of National Geographic, Star Wars and even Marvel Studios, from now on.

Of therumorsPersistent users have also mentioned a potential takeover of Disney by Apple. But this information is only pure speculation, it seems: no real discussion between the two giants is underway on this subject.

Very different prices depending on the platforms

If growth is relatively weak during this back-to-school period, it is perhaps also because rising prices are struggling to convince, in the midst of inflation. Disney+ now costs 8.99 euros per month, for the most affordable offer. Against 5.99 euros per month for the subscription with Netflix advertising, or 6.99 euros per month for the Apple TV+ streaming catalog (without ads, for the moment).
