James Bond,Mulan,Fast and Furious 9... major film postponements have been piling up since the start of the year. It must be said that the period clearly does not lend itself to cinema releases, particularly in France, where the time has come for confinement. Aware of the problem, Universal Pictures studios have decided to broadcast their films online at the same time as they are released in theaters. The offer will be accessible on iTunes and on the main VOD platforms.
An offer impossible to put in place in France
This initiative, which is aimed at American consumers, will be sold at a price of 19.99 dollars, with the possibility of renting the film for two days. Among the feature films that will be available, we find in particularThe Hunt,Invisible Manor evenEmma.
In a press release, Jeff Shell, CEO of NBCUniversal, returned to the reasons which pushed him to take the plunge:
Rather than delaying these films or releasing them in a difficult environment, we wanted to provide customers with an option for watching these titles at home that was both accessible and affordable. We hope and believe that people will still go to theaters when possible, but we understand that for those residing in impacted regions, this is becoming less and less possible.
For Universal, it is also an opportunity to test VOD alongside cinema releases during this very special period. Normally, cinemas are very hostile to this type of practice and do not hesitate to make it known. In France, the law very scrupulously regulates these initiatives and this type of offer cannot see the light of day due to the media chronology. You have to wait at least three months after its release for a feature film to be available for sale and rental.
