Apple abandons the idea of a “homemade” Wi-Fi chip?

Apple has been working on producing its own parts for years. The M1 chip was the first element in this direction, but it is far from the last. The Cupertino company is focusing in particular on the production of a 5G modem or even screens for its iPhones.

Apple wants to produce “in-house”, but does not have the resources

But another part of the Apple phone interests the latter. The Wifi chip is indeed a central tool for iPhones. Today it is the company Broadcom which is responsible for the development of the latter. For some time there was talk in Apple Park of producing its own Wifi chips, following the same development model as with M1, but the Apple brand seems to have given up on this idea.

The internal workforce would not be sufficient to develop a series A and series M chip every year, while also working on a chip for WiFi and a high-performance 5G modem. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the project was therefore abandoned by Apple's thinking heads.

No Wifi chip, the 5G modem will wait

The TF Securites analyst assures that the recent development of the M1 and M2 chips, but also of the A16 and A17 chips, has put a stop to the manufacturing of Wifi chips, the strategic interest of which is lower. Apple would have even wanted to develop a Wifi chip and a Bluetooth chip, different, therefore slower than the combined offering from Broadcom available today in iPhones.

This work on processors would also have had repercussions for 5G modems, the production of which by Apple still does not seem to be relevant. Produced by Qualcomm for several years, 5G modems for iPhones will be designed in the future by Apple, but the Apple brand does not want to miss its entry into this market. As a reminder, Apple invested more than a billion dollars to buy Intel's patents in the design of 5G modems.
