Launched in September for the general public, iOS 16 has since failed to convince. The apparent lack of innovation and the presence of numerous bugs would have scared away users who prefer to keep a previous update with iOS 15 in almost one in three cases.
Until now it was quite difficult to know precisely what share of users were using iOS 16. But Apple has just made official figures on this subject public. The Apple brand explains that the adoption rate for the latest version of its OS is 72%. A figure that rises to 81% when only taking into account iPhones marketed over the last four years.
iPhone, iPad: the same fight
Apple also gave information about updates on iPads. Apple's tablets suffer even more from the lack of updates by users. According to figures given by Apple, one in two tablets has been updated to iPadOS 16.
On “recent” products (which are less than four years old), this adoption rate does not take off and only reaches 54%. A figure which demonstrates a bad habit adopted by a majority of users.
For them, tablets, like computers, do not need to be updated. Since the changes are quite minor when updating these devices, users have even less of a feeling of “necessity” to update.
Updates: the unloved
Doing updates is often seen as a waste of time that will slow down devices. Apple recognized a few years ago that new operating systems could “restrict” iPhones in order to preserve their autonomy. Although the practice has been abolished internally, users are still fearful and a small portion of consumers categorically refuse to make updates.
Apple has just published iOS 16.3.1 and iPadOS 16.3.1. Version 16.4 is expected in a few days. iOS 17 for its part should be presented in June during the next WWDC. Apple could take the opportunity to shed light on a long-standing project, the virtual reality headset.
