Apple spends 3.5 million euros on lobbying in Europe

Lobbying is a common practice within European bodies; while pharmaceutical and oil manufacturers are accustomed to doing so, large new technology companies have also gotten into it in recent years. According to the latest report from Corporate Europe Observatory and LobbyControl, two groups advocating transparency on lobbying, the Tech sector today spends more than oil companies or the pharmaceutical sector.

According to them, the main reason for this spending, which has exploded over the past 5 years, would be a global awareness of the situation in the technological world and a questioning of the economic models of the largest companies in the sector (Facebook and Google in the first place). ). Based on advertising, the finances of these two monsters are fragile,a simple change of legislationcan turn everything upside down.

Apple is doing it too

For its part, the Cupertino company had long remained away from these political-economic discussions, while its economic model, far from advertising, was not worried by the decisions taken in Brussels. But in recent months and the start of the case against Epic Games, many voices have been raised against Apple and its App Store, the latter being judged by its detractors as anti-competitive.

So since then, Apple has been lobbying. In 2020, she would have spent more than 3.5 million euros to tip the scales in her favor. The Cupertino company remains far behind Google, Facebook and Microsoft (respectively 5.7 million, 5.5 and 5.2 for Microsoft).

In South Korea, the law has already passed. Both Apple and Google will be forced to open third-party payment platforms in their application stores. The idea is to allow developers to free themselves from the 15 to 30% commissions taken for each purchase on the App Store and the Play Store.
