Apple files new patent showcasing “self-healing” solution for foldable screens

Rumorsabout a foldable iPhone appear everywhere. If Apple never really formalized the project, we were able to get our hands on several patents which could confirm the brand's objectives. The latest patent is very interesting. It presents a phone whose screen is capable of bending or curving, all while “healing” wear and tear. For 5 years, Apple has been exploiting all existing avenues to ultimately be able to offer the ultimate foldable smartphone. A strategy different from that used by Samsung and other competitors.

A screen that can erase scratches.

The latest avenue exploited by the Cupertino firm is therefore the screen which regenerates itself thanks to its hinge system. The patent entitled“Electronic Devices With Flexible Display Cover Layers”proposes mixing rigid and flexible areas for a screen, and also using what Apple calls“self-healing”. In French"self healing".This 11,000 word patent includes a small, but very interesting, part about this invention.

Apple explains that the flexible layer of the smartphone can itself include an elastomer layer. The elastomer is a polymer with elastic properties, and should serve in this case as a self-healing agent. This material is very often used in memory foam mattresses. It owes its ability to return to a previous form thanks to heat, like the body heat of a person sleeping on a mattress. It remains to be seen whether this patent will ultimately be retained for the final model.
