Practical iOS 12: safer passwords, duplicate detection and password sharing

iOS 12 improves performance and stability of compatible machines, and offers several new featureslisted here. Among these, iOS can nowsuggest more secure passwords, etdetect duplicates.

Since iOS 12, the system can now suggest complex passwords, which are then automatically saved in iCloud Keychain. For existing passwords, iOS 12 can show duplicates for changing them.

Here ishow this new password suggestion and audit feature works:

iOS 12 Suggested Passwords

When a user visits a site in Safari, it asks to sign in with an account. When creating the account, and choosing a password, iOS 12 will suggesttwo options.

It is possible to choosethe strong password suggested by iOS, or create your own password. The password is then automatically saved in iCloud Keychain.

Note: It appears that this does notdoes not yet work with all websites.

iOS 12 offers a new feature that allows you to quickly identify duplicate passwords in iCloud Keychain.

To do this, you must go to Settings, then to “Passwords and accounts“, then select “Web/app passwords“.

On this new page which appears after authentication via Touch ID or Face ID, we can see the list of passwords saved in iCloud Keychain. iOS 12 displays awarning signnext to eachpassword already usedelsewhere.

By tapping on the warning, the user can view the site, username and password. iOS 12 suggest user to change password. To do this, press “Change the password on the site“.

The user is then sent back to the site in question to change the password.

Sharing passwords with iOS 12

iOS 12 allows you to quicklyshare a passwordwith another user, using the functionAirDrop.

To do this, simply go to the page of a site with username and password (seen in the previous paragraph). Then press the password, to bring up two options, “Copy” and “AirDrop“.

Select “AirDrop,” and the nearby contact you want to share this password with.
