With iOS 12, Siri opens up to third-party players like Spotify

Currently in iOS 11, Siri can launch
third-party players like Spotify, but it is impossible to finely control
playing a particular song for example, with the voice assistant.
While for Apple Music, there are many commands to
control playback without touching the screen.

However with iOS 12, Apple seems to have decidedto open the
Siri media features
so that it works better with
third party readers.

Apple has integrated a new function "Play Media" to Siri
under iOS 12, which was demonstrated during the demo of
Shortcutsof Siri duringkeynote
from WWDC
and detailed during a session dedicated to developers
here.

Developers can integrate "Play Media" into their applications to
allow tocontrol audio and video with wizard
vocal
.

However, it is likely that the user will have to program commands
voice with the new Shortcuts feature of Siri in iOS 12 for
perhaps control third-party readers more finely.

This is a first step in opening up Siri regarding
media management in third-party apps, we will certainly know more
when the Shortcuts app will be available in iOS 12, while we cannot
what to hope for an opening of more advanced voice commands to the destination
music apps such as Spotify.
